Abstract:An oral composition such as a dentifrice or mouthwash, containing an aqueous phase of water and as solubilizing agent propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, methyl cellosolve, ethyl cellosolve, olive oil, castor oil, amyl acetate, ethyl acetate, glyceryl tristearate or benzyl benzoate mixed with at least one of glycerine and sorbitol, a substantially water-insoluble noncationic antibacterial antiplaque agent, such as 2,4,4'-trichloro-2.sup.1 -hydroxydiphenyl ether (triclosan) or hexyl resorcinol and a synthetic anionic linear polymeric polycarboxylate having a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 1,000,000.

Patent Claims: 1. An oral dentifrice composition comprising in an orally acceptable vehicle, a water-humectant phase, said water and humectant comprising at least about 10% by weight of said oral composition, about 10-75% by weight of a dentally acceptable polishing material, an effective antiplaque amount in the range of about 0.01-5% by weight of a substantially water insoluble noncationic phenolic compound anti-bacterial agent and about 0.005-4% by weight of a synthetic anionic polymeric polycarboxylate having a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 1,000,000, which polycarboxylate enhances delivery and adherence of said antibacterial agent and the retention thereof on tooth surfaces, wherein said water-humectant phase includes a solubilizing agent which prevents precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity and which solubilizes said substantially water-insoluble non-cationic phenolic compound antibacterial agent and is present in amount sufficient to dissolve said antibacterial agent and prevent precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity.

2. The oral composition claimed in claim 1 containing about 0.5-50% by weight of propylene glycol.

3. The oral composition claimed in claim 2 wherein said antibacterial agent is present in amount of about 0.1-0.5%.

4. The oral composition claimed in claim 1 containing about 0.01-5% by weight of said antibacterial agent, wherein said antibacterial agent is selected from the group consisting of hexyl resorcinol, 2,2'-methylene bis(4-chloro-6-bromophenol), 2-methyl phenol and methyl-p-chlorophenol.

5. The oral composition claimed in claim 1 wherein said polymeric polycarboxylate is present in amount of about 0.1 to 2% of a water soluble alkali metal or ammonium salt of a copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic acid or anhydride having a molecular weight of about 30,000 to about 500,000.

6. The oral composition claimed in claim 1 containing an effective anticalculus amount of material comprising at least one linear molecularly dehydrated polyphosphate salt as essential anticalculus agent.

7. The oral composition claimed in claim 6 wherein said polyphosphate salt is present in amount of about 0.1-7% by weight and is tetrasodium pyrophosphate.

8. The oral composition claimed in claim 6 wherein said composition contains an amount of fluoride ion source sufficient to supply 25 ppm. to 2,000 ppm. of fluoride ions.

9. The oral composition claimed in claim 6 wherein said fluoride source is sodium fluoride.

10. The oral composition claimed in claim 1 wherein said composition contains an amount of flouride ion source sufficient to supply 25 ppm to 2000 ppm of fluoride ions.

11. The oral composition claimed in claim 1 wherein said oral composition contains a dentally acceptable water-insoluble polishing agent and said oral compositions is a toothpaste or gel dentifrice.

12. The oral composition claimed in claim 11 wherein said oral composition contains about 0.5-50% by weight of propylene glycol, about 0.1-10% by weight a gelling agent and about 10-75% by weight of said polishing agent and said oral composition is a toothpaste or gel dentifrice.

13. The oral composition claimed in claim 12 wherein about 0.3% by weight of said antibacterial agent is present, about 0.1-2% by weight of said polycarboxylate is present and about 0.5-1% by weight of propylene glycol is present.

14. The oral composition claimed in claim 10 wherein said polishing material is a silica polishing material.

15. An oral mouthrinse composition comprising in an orally acceptable vehicle containing about 70-99.9% by weight of a mixture of water and alcohol in a weight ratio of from about 1:1 to about 20:1, an effective antiplaque amount in the range of about 0.01-5% by weight of a substantially water insoluble noncationic phenolic compound antibacterial agent and about 0.005-4% by weight of a synthetic anionic polymeric polycarboxylate having a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 1,000,000, which polycarboxylate enhances delivery and adherence of said antibacterial agent and the retention thereof on tooth surfaces, wherein said water-humectant phase includes a solubilizing agent which prevents precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity and which solubilizes said substantially water-insoluble non-cationic phenolic compound antibacterial agent and is present in amount sufficient to dissolve said antibacterial agent and prevent precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity.

16. The oral composition claimed in claim 13 wherein said alcohol is ethanol.

17. The oral composition claimed in claim 13 wherein about 5-20% by weight of propylene glycol is present.

The oral composition claimed in claim 1 wherein said solubilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, methyl cellosolve, ethyl cellosolve, olive oil, castor oil, amyl acetate, ethyl acetate, glyceryl tristearate and benzyl benzoate mixed with at least one of glycerine and sorbitol.

19. An oral dentifrice composition comprising in an orally acceptable vehicle, a water-humectant phase, said water and humectant comprising at least about 10% by weight of said oral composition, about 10-75% by weight of a dentally acceptable polishing material, an effective antiplaque amount in the range of about 0.01-5% by weight a substantially water insoluble noncationic phenolic compound anti-bacterial agent selected from the group consisting of hexyl resorcinol, 2,2'-methylene bis(4-chloro-6-bromophenol), 2-methyl phenol and methyl-p-chlorophenol and about 0.1-2% by weight of a synthetic anionic polymeric polycarboxylate having a molecular weight of about 30,000 to about 500,000, which polycarboxylate enhances delivery and adherence of said antibacterial agent and the retention thereof on tooth surfaces, which polymeric polycarboxylate is a water soluble alkali metal or ammonium salt of a copolymer of a vinyl methyl ether and maleic acid or anhydride, wherein said water-humectant phase includes a solubilizing agent which prevents precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity and which solubilizes said substantially water-insoluble non-cationic phenolic compound antibacterial agent and is present in amount sufficient to dissolve said antibacterial agent and prevent precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity, which solubilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, methyl cellosolve, ethyl cellosolve, olive oil, castor oil, amyl acetate, ethyl acetate, glyceryl tristearate and benzyl benzoate mixed with at least one of glycerine and sorbitol.

20. The oral composition claimed in claim 19 where in said phenolic compound is hexyl resorcinol, said polymeric polycarboxylate is a 1:4-4:1 copolymer of maleic anhydride or acid with methyl vinyl ether and said solubilising agent is propylene glycol.

In a method of preparing an oral composition dentifrice comprising an orally acceptable vehicle, a water-humectant phase, said water and humectant comprising at least about 10% by weight of said oral composition, about 10-75% by weight of a dentally acceptable polishing material, and an effective antiplaque amount in the range of about 0.01-5% by weight of a substantially water insoluble noncationic phenolic compound anti-bacterial agent, the improvement which comprises employing about 0.005-4% by weight of a synthetic anionic polymeric polycarboxylate having a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 1,000,000, which polycarboxylate enhances delivery and adherence of said antibacterial agent and the retention thereof on tooth surfaces and employing in said water-humectant phase, a solubilizing agent which prevents precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity and which solubilizes said substantially water-insoluble non-cationic phenolic compound antibacterial agent and is present in amount sufficient to dissolve said antibacterial agent and prevent precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity.

A method of inhibiting plaque formation comprising applying to oral surfaces, an oral composition dentifrice comprising an orally acceptable vehicle, a water-humectant phase, said water and humectant comprising at least about 10% by weight of said oral composition, about 10-75% by weight of a dentally acceptable polishing material, an effective antiplaque amount in the range of about 0.01-5% by weight of a substantially water insoluble noncationic phenolic compound anti-bacterial agent and about 0.005-4% by weight of a synthetic anionic polymeric polycarboxylate having a molecular weight of about 1,000 to about 1,000,000, which polycarboxylate enhances delivery and adherence of said antibacterial agent and the retention thereof on tooth surfaces, wherein said water-humectant phase includes a solubilizing agent which prevents precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity and which solubilizes said substantially water-insoluble non-cationic phenolic compound antibacterial agent and is present in amount sufficient to dissolve said antibacterial agent and prevent precipitation of said antibacterial agent upon dilution with saliva during use in the oral cavity.

The oral composition claimed in claim 15, wherein said polymeric polycarboxylate is present in amount of about 0.1 to 2% of a water soluble alkali metal or ammonium salt of a copolymer of vinyl methyl ether and maleic acid or anhydride having a molecular weight of about 30,000 to about 500,000.

24. The oral composition claimed in claim 15 containing an effective anticalculus amount of material comprising at least one linear molecularly dehydrated polyphosphate salt as essential anticalculus agent.

25. The oral composition claimed in claim 24 wherein said polyphosphate salt is present in amount of about 0.1-7% by weight and is tetrasodium pyrophosphate.

26. The oral composition claimed in claim 24 wherein said composition contains an amount of fluoride ion source sufficient to supply 25 ppm. to 2,000 ppm. of fluoride ions.
