A method for the selective treatment of virus infections in an animal or human host comprising administering to said host so infected an amount effective to treat said virus infection of phosphonoformic acid or a physiologically acceptable salt thereof. 2. A method according to claim 1 for the treatment of infections caused by herpes viruses. 3. A method according to claim 1 for the treatment of infections caused by herpes simplex type 1 viruses. 4. A method according to claim 1 for the treatment of infections caused by varicella (Herpes zoster) viruses. 6. A method according to claim 1 for the treatment of infections caused by influenza viruses. 9. A method according to claim 1 for the treatment of infections caused by influenza type A or B viruses. 10. A method according to claim 1 for the treatment of infections caused by influenza type A viruses. 11. A method according to claim 1 for the treatment of infections, caused by papilloma viruses. 12. A method according to claim 1 for the treatment of herpes dermatitis, herpes genitalis, herpes keratitis and herpes encephalitis. 13.
