Patent Claims: |
1. An injectable pharmaceutical composition useful for treating viral infections in a mammal having a viral infection comprising an effective amount of the compound
9-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl)guanine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
2. An injectable pharmaceutical composition of claim 1 wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt is an alkali metal salt. 3. An injectable pharmaceutical composition of claim 2 wherein the alkali metal salt is the sodium salt, i.e., the sodium salt of 9-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl)guanine. 4. A method of treating viral infection in a mammal which comprises administering an effective amount of the composition of claim 1. 5. The method of claim 4 wherein the mammal is a human. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein the virus is Herpes Simplex virus I. 7. The method of claim 5 wherein the virus is Herpes Simplex virus II. 8. The method of claim 5 wherein the virus is cytomegalovirus. 9. The method of claim 5 wherein the virus is Epstein-Barr virus. 10. The method of claim 5 wherein the virus is varicella Zoster virus. 11. A method of treating viral infection in a mammal by orally administering an effective amount of the compound 9-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl)guanine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 12. The method of claim 11 wherein the virus is Herpes Simplex virus I. 13. The method of claim 11 wherein the virus is Herpes Simplex virus II. 14. The method of claim 11 wherein the virus is Cytomegalovirus. 15. The method of claim 11 wherein the virus is Epstein-Barr virus. 16. The method of claim 11 wherein the virus is varicella Zoster virus. 17. A method of treating viral infection in a mammal by topically administering an effective amount of the compound 9-(1,3-dihydroxy-2-propoxymethyl)guanine or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 18. The method of claim 17 wherein the virus is Herpes Simplex virus I. 19. The method of claim 17 wherein the virus is Herpes Simplex virus II. 20. The method of claim 17 wherein the virus is vericella Zoster virus. |
