Title:	Tricyclic inhibitors of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases
Abstract:	Compounds of the formula below are poly(ADP-ribosyl)transferase (PARP) inhibitors, and are useful as therapuetics in treatment of cancers and the amelioration of the effects of stroke, head trauma, and nuerodegenerative disease. ##STR1## As cancer therapuetics, the compounds of the invention may be used, e.g., in combination with cytotoxic agents and/or radiation.

A pharmaceutical composition comprising: (a) an effective amount of a PARP-inhibiting agent that is: (i) a compound selected from the group consisting of: ##STR140## ##STR141## ##STR142## ##STR143## ##STR144## (ii) a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; and (b) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for said PARP-inhibiting agent. 3. A compound selected from the group consisting of ##STR145## ##STR146## ##STR147## ##STR148## ##STR149## ##STR150## ##STR151## ##STR152## ##STR153## ##STR154## ##STR155## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 4. A compound having the structure: ##STR156## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 5. A pharmaceutical composition comprising: (a) an effective amount of a PARP-inhibiting agent that is a compound represented by the following formula: ##STR157## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; and (b) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier for said PARP-inhibiting agent.
