Patent Claims: |
1. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula A: ##STR25##
or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient. 2. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 1 wherein said salt of said compound is the sodium salt. 3. A method of treating herpesvirus infections in a human in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human an effective, non-toxic dose of a pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 1. 4. A method of treating herpesvirus infections in a human in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human an effective, non-toxic dose of a pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 2. 5. A method of treating a herpesvirus infection wherein said infection is a herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) virus infection in a human or animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human or animal an effective, non-toxic dose of a pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 1. 6. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 1 which is suitable for topical application. 7. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 6 suitable for application to the skin. 8. A method of treating herpesvirus infections in an animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said animal an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 1. 9. A method as recited in claim 8 wherein the compound is administered by injection. 10. A method as recited in claim 8 wherein the compound is administered topically. 11. A method as recited in claim 10 wherein the compound administered to the eyes. 12. A method as recited in claim 10 wherein the compound administered to the skin. 13. A method as recited in claim 12 wherein the compound is in a cream formulation. 14. A method of treating herpesvirus infections in an animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said animal an effective amount of a pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 2. 15. A method as recited in claim 14 wherein the compound is administered by injection. 16. A method as recited in claim 14 wherein the compound is administered topically. 17. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein the compound is administered to the eyes. 18. A method as recited in claim 16 wherein the compound is administered to the skin. 19. A method as recited in claim 18 wherein the compound is in a cream formulation. 20. A method of treating a herpesvirus infection, wherein said infection is a herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) virus infection, in a human or animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human or animal an effective, non-toxic dose of a compound of the formula ##STR26## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 21. A method of treating a herpesvirus infection, wherein said infection is a herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) virus infection, in a human or animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human or animal an effective, non-toxic dose of a compound of the formula ##STR27## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 22. A method of treating a herpesvirus infection, wherein said infection is a varciella zoster (VZV) virus infection, in a human or animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human or animal an effective, non-toxic dose of a compound of the formula ##STR28## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 23. A method as recited in claim 3 wherein the compound is administered by injection. 24. A method as recited in claim 3 wherein the compound is administered topically. 25. A method as recited in claim 24 wherein the compound is administered to the eyes. 26. A method as recited in claim 24 wherein the compound is administered to the skin. 27. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a sodium salt of a compound of the formula ##STR29## and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient, said compound having a purity of greater than 90% by weight. 28. A method as recited in claim 4 wherein the compound is administered by injection. 29. A method as recited in claim 4 wherein the compound is administered topically. 30. A method as recited in claim 4 wherein the compound is administered to the eyes. 31. A method as recited in claim 29, wherein the compound is administered to the skin. 32. A method as recited in claim 31 wherein the compound is in a cream formulation. 33. A method as recited in claim 5 wherein the compound is administered by injection. 34. A method as recited in claim 5 wherein the compound is administered topically. 35. A method as recited in claim 5 wherein the compound is administered to the eyes. 36. A method as recited in claim 34 wherein the compound is administered to the skin. 37. A method as recited in claim 36 wherein the compound is in a cream formulation. 38. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 27 which is suitable for topical application. 39. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 2 which is suitable for injection. 40. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 7 formulated as a cream. 41. A method of treating a herpesvirus infection wherein said infection is a herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) virus infection in a human or animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human or animal an effective, non-toxic dose of a pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 1. 42. A method of treating a herpesvirus infection wherein said infection is a varicella zoster virus (VZV) virus infection in a human or animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human or animal an effective, non-toxic dose of a pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 1. 43. A method of treating herpesvirus infections in a human or animal in need thereof, which method comprises administering to said human or animal an effective, non-toxic dose of a compound of the formula ##STR30## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 44. A method as recited in claim 43 wherein said pharmaceutically acceptable salt is the sodium salt. 45. A method as recited in claim 26 wherein the compound is in a cream formulation. 46. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 27 which is suitable for injection. 47. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 38 suitable for application to the eyes. 48. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 38 suitable for application to the skin. 49. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 48 in the form of a cream. 50. A pharmaceutical composition as recited in claim 42 suitable for application to the eyes. |
