Summary for Patent: 6,715,485
Title: Nasal delivery device
Abstract:A delivery device (20, 22) for and a method of delivering a substance to the nasal airway (1) of a subject, in particular the posterior region of the nasal airway, the delivery device comprising: a closure unit for causing the closure of the oropharyngeal velum of the subject; and a delivery unit for delivering a gas flow entraining a substance to one of the nostrils of the subject at such a driving pressure as to flow around the posterior margin of the nasal septum and out of the other nostril of the subject, wherein the delivery unit comprises a nosepiece (30, 40, 58, 82, 102, 132) which includes an outlet through which the gas flow is in use delivered to the one nostril and a sealing member for sealing the one nostril to the outlet such as in use to prevent the escape of the gas flow through the one nostril.

3. The delivery device of claim 2, wherein the flow resistor is configured to maintain a positive pressure differential of at least about 5 cm H.sub.2 O between locations upstream and downstream thereof on exhalation by the subject.

4. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the delivery unit further comprises a delivery channel connected to the nosepiece and configured to receive a substance to be delivered to the one nostril.

5. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the delivery unit further comprises a supply unit for supplying a gas flow entraining a substance to the nosepiece.

6. The delivery device of claim 2, wherein the supply unit is configured to deliver a gas flow separate to an exhalation flow.

7. The delivery device of claim 2, wherein the delivery unit further comprises an actuation mechanism for actuating the supply unit in response to exhalation by the subject.

8. The delivery device of claim 2, further comprising: a control unit for controlling the supply unit such as to control the flow rate of the delivered gas flow.

9. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the closure unit comprises a mouthpiece and a movable member configured to move on exhalation by the subject through the mouthpiece, and the delivery unit further comprises a delivery channel connected to the nosepiece and configured to receive a substance to be delivered to the one nostril and an impeller operably coupled to the movable member such in use as to move therewith and develop the gas flow through the delivery channel for entraining the substance.

10. The delivery device of claim 9, wherein the movable member is configured to act as a flow resistor and provide a flow resistance to the exhaled air flow.

11. The delivery device of claim 10, wherein the movable member is configured to maintain a positive pressure of at least about 10 cm H.sub.2 O upstream thereof on exhalation by the subject.

12. The delivery device of claim 9, wherein the movable member is a rotatable member.

13. The delivery device of claim 9, further comprising: a dispensing unit for dispensing a dose of a substance into the delivery channel.

14. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the delivery unit comprises a mouthpiece and a channel connecting the mouthpiece to the nosepiece, the channel being configured to receive a substance to be delivered, such that exhalation through the mouthpiece delivers the substance through the nosepiece.

15. The delivery device of claim 1, further comprising: an outlet unit comprising a nosepiece for fitting in the other nostril and a flow resistor for providing a flow resistance to the gas flow exiting the other nostril so as in use to maintain a positive dynamic pressure upstream thereof.

16. The delivery device of claim 15, wherein the flow resistor of the outlet unit is adjustable to allow for adjustment of the flow resistance.

17. The delivery device of claim 15, wherein the outlet unit further comprises an indicator for providing at least one of a visual or an audible signal indicative of achieving at least one of a predetermined flow rate or pressure upstream thereof.

18. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the delivery unit further comprises an indicator for providing at least one of a visual or an audible signal on exhalation by the subject through the mouthpiece.

19. The delivery device of claim 18, wherein the indicator comprises a display member which is moved into view on exhalation by the subject through the mouthpiece.

20. The A combination of the delivery device of claim 1, and substance to be delivered.

21. The combination of claim 20, wherein the substance is one or more of a medicament, a cleansing agent for cleansing the nasal airway, or an irrigating agent for irrigating the nasal airway.

22. A nasal delivery device for delivering a substance to the nasal airway of a subject, comprising: a closure unit for causing the closure of the oropharyngeal velum of the subject; and a delivery unit for delivering a substance to one of the nostrils of the subject, wherein the delivery unit comprises a nosepiece which includes an outlet through which the substance is in use delivered to the one nostril and a sealing member for providing a fluid tight seal between the outlet and the one nostril.

23. The delivery device of claim 22, wherein the closure unit comprises a mouthpiece through which the subject in use exhales and a flow resistor connected to the mouthpiece for providing a flow resistance to the exhaled air flow.

24. The delivery device of claim 23, wherein the flow resistor is configured to maintain a positive pressure differential of at least about 5 cm HzO between locations upstream and downstream thereof on exhalation by the subject.
