Title: | Device for producing high pressure in a fluid in miniature |
Abstract: | A miniaturized device for pressurizing fluid. The device includes a hollow piston that provides a fluid path and a valve member. The valve member is configured for axial movement so that the valve axis remains parallel to the piston axis. The valve member is arranged at one end of the hollow piston. The valve member may be partially or completely disposed within the hollow piston. The device is particularly adapted for use in a mechanically operated atomizer to produce an inhalable aerosol of a liquid medicament without the use of propellant gas. |

Patent Claims: |
1. A device for pressurizing fluid, the device having an inlet end and an outlet end, the fluid exiting from the device at the outlet end and moving into a pressure chamber,
the device comprising: a hollow piston having a piston axis, said hollow piston providing a path for fluid through the device; a valve member having a valve axis and comprising an undercut peg having a longitudinal axis coaxial with said valve axis,
said undercut peg including a projecting end, said valve member configured for axial movement wherein the valve axis remains parallel to the piston axis, said valve member movable between an open position and a closed position; a stop means comprising
an inwardly shaped edge disposed at an outlet end of said hollow piston for limiting axial movement of said valve member; and a sealing surface for sealing an inlet end of said valve member so that said valve member is sealed when in the closed
position, wherein fluid flows through the device into the pressure chamber when said valve member is in the open position, and moving said valve member from the open position to the closed position pressurizes fluid in the pressure chamber.
2. A device according to claim 1, wherein said projecting end of said undercut peg is chamfered. 3. A device according to claim 1, wherein said inwardly shaped edge defines a bore through which said undercut peg is received so that said projecting end is engaged by said inwardly shaped edge to limit axial movement of said valve member. 4. A device according to claim 1, wherein said undercut peg defines a bore along the longitudinal axis of said undercut peg. 5. A device for pressurizing fluid, the device having an inlet end and an outlet end, the fluid exiting from the device at the outlet end and moving into a pressure chamber, the device comprising: a hollow piston having a piston axis, said hollow piston providing a path for fluid through the device; a valve member having a valve axis, said valve member configured for axial movement wherein the valve axis remains parallel to the piston axis, said valve member movable between an open position and a closed position; a stop means comprising an inwardly shaped edge disposed at an outlet end of said hollow piston for limiting axial movement of said valve member; a sealing surface for sealing an inlet end of said valve member so that said valve member is sealed when in the closed position, wherein fluid flows through the device into the pressure chamber when said valve member is in the open position, and moving said valve member from the open position to the closed position pressurizes fluid in the pressure chamber; and a displacement body disposed within said hollow piston, wherein an outer diameter of said displacement body is substantially equal to an inner diameter of said hollow piston, said displacement body defining a channel for fluid. 6. A device according to claim 5, wherein a length of said displacement body is less than a length of said hollow piston. 7. A device for pressurizing fluid, the device having an inlet end and an outlet end, the fluid exiting from the device at the outlet end and moving into a pressure chamber, the device comprising: a hollow piston having a piston axis, said hollow piston providing a path for fluid through the device; a valve member having a valve axis, said valve member configured for axial movement wherein the valve axis remains parallel to the piston axis, said valve member movable between an open position and a closed position; a stop means comprising an inwardly shaped edge disposed at an outlet end of said hollow piston for limiting axial movement of said valve member; and a sealing surface wherein said sealing surface is an outer surface of said inwardly shaped edge for sealing an inlet end of said valve member so that said valve member is sealed when in the closed position, wherein fluid flows through the device into the pressure chamber when said valve member is in the open position, and moving said valve member from the open position to the closed position pressurizes fluid in the pressure chamber. |
