Patent Claims:	1. A compound of formula I: ##STR00035## wherein, A is ##STR00036## Y is chosen from O, S, NR.sup.17 and NOH; R.sup.1 is --NHR.sup.8; R.sup.2 and R.sup.2a are both hydrogen or taken together R.sup.2 and R.sup.2a are .dbd.O; R.sup.3 is chosen from hydrogen, lower alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, benzyl and hydroxyalkyl; R.sup.4 is chosen from hydrogen, hydroxyl, amino, lower alkoxy, C.sub.1-C.sub.20 alkyl and C.sub.1-C.sub.20 alkyl substituted with hydroxyl or carbonyl; R.sup.7 is chosen from hydrogen and hydroxyl; R.sup.5 is a lower alkyl ; R.sup.6 is a lower alkyl; wherein together R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 form one ring, said ring having optional additional substitution; R.sup.8 is chosen from hydrogen, --OH, --NH.sub.2 and --CH.sub.2R.sup.15; R.sup.15 is chosen from hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl and alkyl substituted with alkoxy, amino, alkylamino and dialkylamino; and R.sup.17 is chosen from hydrogen, alkyl, aryl and benzyl. 2. A compound of claim 1 wherein A is chosen from: --CONH.sub.2, --C(.dbd.S)NH.sub.2, --C(O)NHOH, --C(O)NHNH.sub.2, --CONHCH.sub.3, --CONHBn, --CONHCH.sub.2(4-MeOC.sub.6H.sub.4), and --C(.dbd.NOH)NH.sub.2. 3. A compound of claim 2 wherein A is CONH.sub.2. 4. A compound of claim 3 wherein R.sup.7 is hydroxyl. 5. A compound of claim 3 wherein R.sup.3 is lower alkyl. 6. A compound of claim 5 wherein R.sup.3 is selected from methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, cyclopropyl, butyl, s-butyl, t-butyl and cyclobutyl. 7. A compound of claim 3 wherein R.sup.3 is alkenyl. 8. A compound of claim 3 wherein A is CONH.sub.2, R.sup.7 is hydroxyl and R.sup.3 is cyclopropyl. 9. A compound according to claim 1 of formula: ##STR00037## wherein, A is ##STR00038## Y is chosen from O, S, NR.sup.17 and NOH; R.sup.1 is --NHR.sup.8; R.sup.2 and R.sup.2a are both hydrogen or taken together R.sup.2 and R.sup.2a are .dbd.O; R.sup.3 is chosen from hydrogen, lower alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, benzyl and hydroxyalkyl; R.sup.4 is chosen from hydrogen, hydroxyl, amino, lower alkoxy, C.sub.1-C.sub.20 alkyl and C.sub.1-C.sub.20 alkyl substituted with hydroxyl or carbonyl; and R.sup.17 is chosen from hydrogen, alkyl, aryl and benzyl. 10. A compound of according to claim 9 of formula: ##STR00039## wherein, A is selected from --CONH.sub.2, --C(.dbd.S)NH.sub.2, --C(O)NHOH, --C(O)NHNH.sub.2, --CONHCH.sub.3, --CONHBn, --CONHCH.sub.2 (4-MeOC.sub.6 H.sub.4), and --C(.dbd.NOH)NH.sub.2; R.sub.19 is selected from --CH.sub.3, --CH.sub.2-c-C.sub.3H.sub.5 and --CH.sub.2-c-C.sub.4H.sub.7. 11. A compound of claim 10 wherein A is --CONH.sub.2. 12. A compound of claim 1 of formula: ##STR00040## wherein, A is selected from --CONH.sub.2, --C(.dbd.S)NH.sub.2, --C(O)NHOH, --C(O)NHNH.sub.2, --CONHCH.sub.3, --CONHBn, --CONHCH.sub.2 (4-MeOC.sub.6 H.sub.4), and --C(.dbd.NOH)NH.sub.2. 13. A compound of claim 12 wherein A is --CONH.sub.2. 14. A compound according to claim 1 having formula: ##STR00041##
