Summary for Patent: 9,408,837
Title:Ameliorating drug-induced elevations in blood pressure by adjunctive use of antihypertensive drugs
Abstract: Patients which are treated with stimulants (e.g., CNS stimulants, sympathomimetic amine, or anorectic/anorexigenic), such as patients being treated for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder or obesity, often are atrisk in developing high blood pressure. Similarly, patients which are treated with analgesics such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) over an extended period of time risk developing high blood pressure. These and other iatrogenic therapies (therapies which inadvertently cause an increase in, e.g., blood pressure) are addressed by providing the patient with one or more antihypertensive drugs, most preferably calcium channel blockers, during the treatment period. The CNS or NSAIDs can be provided separately or together with the antihypertensive drugs or as part of a combined composition. The adjunctive therapy can prevent or reduces cardiovascular disease and other complications of high blood pressure attendant with these iatrogenic therapies.

Patent Claims: 1. A method for ameliorating celecoxib-induced elevation of blood pressure in a subject, comprising: a. administering at least one dose of celecoxib, wherein the at least one dose of celecoxib is sufficient to cause elevation in blood pressure in the subject; and b. administering at least one dose of amlodipine at a dosage which is sufficient to ameliorate blood pressure elevation in the subject.

2. A method for ameliorating celecoxib-induced elevation of blood pressure in a subject in need of anti-inflammatory, analgesic, or antipyretic therapy, comprising: a. administering at least one dose of celecoxib, wherein the at least one dose of celecoxib is sufficient to cause elevation in blood pressure in the subject; and b. administering at least one dose of amlodipine at a dosage which is sufficient to ameliorate blood pressure elevation in the subject.

3. A method for ameliorating celecoxib-induced elevation of blood pressure in a subject, comprising: providing to a subject at least one dose comprising a combination of celecoxib and amlodipine, wherein the amount of celecoxib is sufficient to cause elevation in blood pressure, and wherein the amount of amlodipine is sufficient to ameliorate blood pressure elevation.
